MATERIALITY

Embedded deep within Korean, Chinese, and Taiwanese textile history, lies the art and practice of natural dyeing.  Natural dyeing dates all the way back to 676 AD for these countries, having served a vital role in pigmenting the clothes that displayed and differentiated the ranks between the nobility and the poor.  In today’s society, natural dyeing techniques are used as a way to preserve the rich culture and naturalistic beauty in clothes.

For materiality, we have chosen four of the most popular natural dyes that were used by our ancestors, including turmeric, gromwell, safflower, and indigo.  We have sourced our materials directly from Korea and China and have thoroughly researched ancient and modern dyeing techniques to produce successful methods.  By exploring the art of natural dyes, we are reflecting upon the practices of the past to serve as the material glue of our tricultural celebration.
